Open letter to the Icelandic government

This is an open letter to the Icelandic government written by an Israeli student in International Relations and Islamic & Middle Eastern Studies at Hebrew University, who prefer to stay anonymous.
Dear Honorable Althingi Leaders,as an Israeli student in International Relations and Islamic and Middle Eastern Studies at Hebrew University and I am writing you from Jerusalem, the capital city of the State of Israel. For me and many citizens from my nation, Jerusalem is a symbol of tolerance of all peoples and religions, coexistence, and peace. We in this region live in a complicated daily reality amidst the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, yet are driven to find a common ground with our neighbors in hopes of finding a solution to end the ongoing conflict.

Our central goal is to live in peace and harmony with our neighbors in a secure and sustainable environment just as every state of the world is entitled. With that stated, I deeply regret the recent decision of the government of Iceland to break all diplomatic ties with the State of Israel. While diplomatic ties have been severed as a result of the decision by the Icelandic government, I strongly encourage you to review and consider my appeal noting that no decision is ever irreversible.

Between the years 1952-1976 Iceland fought a war against the United Kingdom (The Cod Wars) for economic survival in order to ensure that its continual existence would be one of prosperity and success for all its citizens. Just as Iceland fought to define its territorial waters, while almost the entire international community disagreed and defined those boundaries as international waters, so also Israel today is utilizing its inherent right to ensure its continuous survival and the right to self-defense in close proximity to its territorial waters while the world zealously condemns it.

I hope that you can understand the reasons for the curfew on Gaza and that it is not100% curfew. In Gaza strip the Hamas "won" the "democratic" elections in 2006. As point of information, the European Union, Israel, Japan, Canada, and the United States classify Hamas as a terrorist organization. Gaza is ruled by Hamas, a murderous terrorist organization directly supported by Iran which is considered a threat to the world according to the UN and many nations. Hamas focuses its efforts on smuggling arms, including thousands of rockets to be aimed at the citizens of Israel – a fact that is clear on account of the more than 10,000 rockets fired at Israeli cities in past years. Hamas also continues to carry out terrorist attacks, as well as to repress the human rights and freedoms of the Palestinians living in Gaza. Also, for four years, Hamas has been holding Gilad Shalit captive in total isolation, has refused to provide details on his condition, and has prevented representatives of the International Red Cross from meeting him, in violation of international law.

As you can understand, the curfew on Gaza comes from the security needs of a country to defend its people. As Iceland prevented the British from fishing in waters near Iceland—when the livelihood of the Icelandic nation was at stake and they could not settle for anything less than a full victory against the British—so Israel is now taking measures to control its waters for the protection of Israeli citizens from terrorist attacks.

Despite attacks by Hamas, Israel maintains an ongoing humanitarian corridor for the transfer of perishable and staple food items to Gaza. This conduit is used by internationally recognized organizations including the United Nations and the Red Cross. Well over a million tons of humanitarian supplies entered Gaza from Israel over the last 18 months equaling nearly a ton of aid for every man, woman and child in Gaza. Millions of dollars worth of international food aid continually flows through the Israeli humanitarian apparatus, ensuring that there is no food shortage in Gaza.

Before the flotilla arrived, Israel called on the organizers of the flotilla which was headed for Gaza to refrain from this provocation, which has nothing to do with concern for the inhabitants of the Strip. Israel also called on them to accept its offer to transfer their cargo to Gaza via the Israeli port of Ashdod. The world can see the pictures which come out from the flotilla ships. This was no peace flotilla but a violent and planned force. We have film footage and pictures that underscore what our soldiers faced; the last thing that could possibly be said about that ship is that it was a peace ship.As a big fan of the Icelandic nation, I look forward to hearing your response and hope that you will reconsider restoring the Israeli-Icelandic relations.

Yours truly,

Anonymous. Jerusalem, Israel

  1. This fellow is building an excellent case here (unless it's a woman). I would probably wish to remain anonymous, too, if I lived in Jerusalem. Even so, there is nothing in here that should make someone angry enough to hurt the writer. What an odd race we are. Keep up the good work, 9uy.

  3. Apparently this individual and the rest of the world differ on the definition of the word "egalitarian." Not even close.

  4. Also, aside from being totally wrong on every account, the writer is also dumb and misinformed.

Iceland did not sever political ties with Israel.

OK. Keep on deluding yourself that fencing off a nation for years, rendering it unable to live, work, grow and seek education, is OK so long as you allow a "humanitarian corridor" so the people in there don't die of starvation.
